She is now fully recovered following treatment by the Manchester University Foundation Trust Community Eating Disorder Service. Have clothes size changed?<\/li>\n<li>Have parents or carers noticed any weight loss or other physical changes?<\/li>\n<li>How long have they been trying to lose weight &amp; what have they tried?<\/li>\n<li>How much are they currently eating &amp; drinking?<\/li>\n<li>Are they over-exercising, vomiting, or using any other methods lose weight or to limit calorie intake? How often?<\/li>\n<li>If they report they are binging, what do they mean by this? How often?<\/li>\n<li>Any physical health concerns: fainting, dehydration, constipation, chest pain, shortness of breath? If appropriate, when did they last have a menstrual cycle?<\/li>\n<li>Any mental health changes: confusion, distress? Any risk of self-harm, suicide or harm from or to others?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to refer<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Refer by letter or email: see contact details below<\/li>\n<li>Refer as soon as a young person presents to you with any combination of the symptoms outlined.<\/li>\n<li>Consent is needed for a referral. Ensure the child or young person and parents\/carers are aware of the referral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The physical exam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Weight and height<\/li>\n<li>BP and pulse (sitting and standing)<\/li>\n<li>Temperature<\/li>\n<li>Blood tests at same time as referral:<\/li>\n<li>FBC, U+E\u2019s, LFT, ESR, TFT, bone profile, Calcium, Magnesium<\/li>\n<li>Refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpsych.ac.uk\/improving-care\/campaigning-for-better-mental-health-policy\/college-reports\/2022-college-reports\/cr233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medical Emergencies in Eating Disorders (MEED) guidance<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DO NOT DELAY REFERRAL WAITING FOR RESULTS!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Red flags<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Weight loss &gt; 1kg a week for a minimum of 2 consecutive weeks AND not eating and\/or fluid refusal for more than 24 hours<\/li>\n<li>Cardiovascular compromise and fainting<\/li>\n<li>Percentage Median BMI &lt;70%<\/li>\n<li>BP &lt;0.4th centile sitting and a postural drop<\/li>\n<li>Pulse &lt;40 bpm<\/li>\n<li>Temperature &lt;35 \u02daC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>IF YOU COME ACROSS THESE SYMPTOMS PLEASE PHONE YOUR LOCAL CYP-CEDS FOR ADVICE<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Other considerations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Low weight\u2019 is now defined as a loss of 10% of a young person\u2019s expected body weight.<\/li>\n<li>Make a referral based on signs and symptoms irrespective of weight.<\/li>\n<li>Consider impact of other external life events and stressors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>THINK: STATE NOT WEIGHT \u2013 WHAT IS THEIR FUNCTIONING LIKE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Timescales<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>All referrals will be screened within 24 hours of receipt except on weekends or Bank Holidays.<\/li>\n<li>All accepted referrals will be screened for urgency and will be offered either an emergency appointment within 24 hours, an urgent within one week appointment or a routine appointment within 28 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DO NOT WATCH &amp; WAIT.
