The 11th March marked Young Carers Action Day, the NHS England Unpaid Carers team has launched a new Supporting Young Carers Guidance for GPs video.
Young carers often remain hidden within primary care, balancing education, family responsibilities, and their own health and wellbeing. This short video has been developed and co-produced with lived experience young carers to support GPs and primary care teams to better identify young carers, understand their needs, and respond appropriately within everyday practice.
The guidance highlights practical actions GPs can take, including recognising signs of caring, starting supportive conversations, making reasonable adjustments, and connecting young carers to local support and services. By improving awareness and early identification, primary care can play a vital role in reducing inequalities and improving outcomes for young carers.
Young Carers Action Day, led by Carers Trust, provides an important opportunity to recognise the contribution of young carers and strengthen the support available to them across health and care settings.
