The annual Social Enterprise100 Index and Impact Pioneer Awards, now in their 16th year, were created by Pioneers Post in partnership with NatWest Social & Community Capital the independent social investment charity funded by NatWest bank.

The Diversity Pioneer Award reflects the commitment shown across Six Degrees every day to deliver inclusive, culturally responsive and community-rooted support that genuinely impact lives.

Six Degrees has been recognised in the first-ever Nat West Social Enterprise 100 Pioneering Impact Leaders list.

Six Degrees aims to build emotionally resilient communities by working in an integrated and inclusive way to reduce health inequalities and long-term pressure on health and social care services.

The judging panel focused on strengths such as:

Recruiting from the communities they serve, ensuring the workforce reflect the local population

Providing first-language therapists to reduce barriers and preserve dignity

An ongoing commitment to addressing the structural barriers that prevent or exclude communities from accessing brief psychological support preventing further distress, harm and inequity.

The judges recognised Six Degrees’ commitment to designing and delivering their services through an intersectional lens (a way of looking at how different parts of someone’s identity and societal structures affect their experience). This enables them to understand people’s lives in complex and nuanced ways by recognising that aspects of identity such as age, gender, race, class, and migration status are not experienced as discrete categories in isolation.

One example of this approach is the work undertaken with the Greater Manchester Bereavement Service. Data indicated that people calling the service were not representative of Greater Manchester’s diverse population, prompting a three-year partnership with Just Psychology (Social Enterprise) to better understand barriers to access. Using a co-production approach, the service worked alongside Arabic, and Cantonese-speaking communities to recruit and train 12 cultural consultants who helped co-design learning for staff in the service, wider communities and advise on improvements to the service. The project created paid employment opportunities for 12 community members, many of whom may otherwise have faced barriers to accessing meaningful work, enabling them to contribute their lived experience and cultural expertise.

The consultants delivered bereavement awareness sessions to 95 community members across Greater Manchester providing valuable insight into cultural perspectives on grief, mourning rituals, and stigma, particularly around suicide and suicide bereavement. While this work did not result in a significant increase in referrals from these communities, it generated valuable learning, many people prefer to access support through established family, faith, and community networks rather than professional services. This co-designed approach strengthened the service’s understanding of culturally appropriate bereavement support and highlighted the importance of working in partnership with trusted community structures, rather than assuming formal services are always the preferred source of support.

Six Degrees’ efforts to go beyond simply hiring interpreters to engage therapists from different communities, that’s what I really felt from what you were doing, that it was inclusive in the most inclusive way, because people were doing for one another, rather than it being an external lens brought to a community. It was the community supporting the community. Guest judge Devi Clark

There is quite a push, to put people into boxes and as humans we just don’t operate that way. We’re much more complex and nuanced. And so, we want to look at the intersections of identity, but also the intersections of how the social, psychological, and the politics impact on people and their mental health. Kelly Hylton, managing director at Six Degrees.

Anti-Bullying Week 2025 takes place from 10th to 14th November, with the theme: Power for Good. You can find out more here

Bullying among young people remains a huge issue, which can lead to self-harm, anxiety, depression, difficulties at school and can negatively impact relationships.

As Kooth’s independent research shows, parents and carers don’t always know bullying is happening, with one in three young people suffering in silence.

Kooth and The Diana Award have produced a powerful film, “The Pretender” that’s based on the experiences young people share with Kooth. Starring a talented group of young people, it tells an emotive story of a boy being bullied on his phone.

Freya found support through Kooth when she was being bullied at school.

Summer is a time of milestones, big decisions and looking ahead to change. Support is available for children, young people and their families.

During the summer holidays, children and young people are out of their usual routines and social networks. Whether they are waiting for exam results, moving up a year at school, changing schools, starting college, or heading off to university, this summer will be the start of change for many families across Greater Manchester.

While results and transitions can be nerve-wracking, they can also mean growth, confidence-building, and resilience. With the right support, children and young people can move forward feeling secure, motivated, and ready to face new challenges.

Exam results

As we get closer to getting exam results, some parents may notice signs of stress, anxiety or uncertainty in their children. Whether you’re waiting for GCSE, A-level, or BTEC results, this time of year can bring up big emotions for young people and their families.

Supporting a child through results day requires patience, empathy, and a focus on their wellbeing. By creating a supportive environment, listening to their concerns, and acknowledging their hard work, parents can help their child through this stressful period. Focusing on their individual experience and celebrating their achievements, regardless of the results, is crucial for building resilience and confidence. Don’t worry – you’re not alone! There are some useful resources and links to wellbeing support.

Take a look at our guide to supporting your child through results day

Moving on

Starting something new is always a big step — and it’s okay if it comes with a few wobbles. With encouragement and clear communication, children can head into new schools, colleges or universities feeling more prepared and positive.

Transitions can be an exciting opportunity and often come with the chance to make new friends, explore new interests, and develop independence. But they can be daunting too and it’s normal to feel anxious.

As a parent there’s a lot you can do to help your child manage the change and minimise anxiety, whatever their situation. If you need a helping hand, we have a wealth of resources online.

Take a look at our guide to supporting your child through education transitions

Holding it together

The best support you can offer your child is your presence and understanding. Whatever is on their mind this summer, knowing that home is a safe and encouraging space makes all the difference. This could mean taking time to talk through uncertainties, planning for upcoming change, or keeping up your usual household routine.

Summer may be full of change, but it could also be a time to come together and regroup, ensuring the whole family is ready for the next stage.
